Crystals of KAPÆRNA

Throughout history, crystals have been used as symbols of various attributes, states, and qualities. At KAPÆRNA, we have carefully selected our crystals—both for their aesthetic appeal and for the significance they have held in different cultures over time. Each crystal possesses its own unique character and serves as a guiding reminder in everyday life.

For us, crystals are not about promises, but about meaning. They are part of our jewelry and work in harmony with the intentions we focus on. If you would like to delve deeper into KAPÆRNA’s philosophy and our perspective on crystals, you can read more about our various intentions.

All the crystals we use are selected to be suitable for jewelry worn frequently. Their durability is measured using the Mohs scale of mineral hardness, which indicates a mineral's resistance to scratching and wear on a scale of 1 to 10. On this scale, 1 represents a very soft mineral, while 10 represents an extremely hard one.

To exemplify, talc has a value of 1 and can be scratched with a fingernail, whereas diamond—the hardest known natural material—ranks at 10. Crystals suitable for jewelry generally have a rating of around 6 or higher, as they better withstand everyday wear. We list the position of each crystal on the scale to provide guidance regarding both durability and usage.

Below, you can read more about the properties, historical use, and cultural symbolism of each crystal.

Black Onyx

Black onyx is a natural crystal belonging to the chalcedony group of minerals, a variety of quartz. It consists primarily of silicon dioxide (SiO₂) and is characterized by its deep black color and smooth, often polished surface. On the Mohs scale of mineral hardness, black onyx ranks around 6.5–7, making it durable enough for use in everyday jewelry.

While onyx occurs naturally in banded forms, the black onyx used in jewelry is often uniformly dark and has historically been highly prized for its elegant and striking appearance.

Historic and cultural significance

Black onyx has been used in jewelry, seals, and amulets for thousands of years. As early as ancient Egypt, Rome, and Greece, onyx was used to craft protective jewelry and objects, often carved with symbols or inscriptions.

During the Roman Empire, onyx was frequently worn by warriors who believed the stone provided strength, courage, and protection in battle. In medieval Europe, black onyx was used as a protective stone against negative influences and was thought to help the wearer remain steadfast during difficult times.

In many cultures, onyx has been viewed as a stone of self-control, discipline, and inner stability, and it has often been associated with the ability to maintain focus and withstand external influences.

Symbolism and spiritual significance

In modern crystal traditions, black onyx is associated with grounding, protection, and inner strength. It is said to help absorb and transform negative energy, as well as provide support during times of stress, anxiety, and emotional imbalance.

Black onyx is often linked to the root chakra (Muladhara), which is associated with security, stability, and grounding. A balanced root chakra is believed to foster feelings of safety, presence, and being anchored in the moment.

The stone is frequently used as a symbol of

  • protection
  • strength and endurance
  • stability during challenging times
  • self-discipline and inner balance.

Black onyx in jewelry

Granted its hardness and dense structure, black onyx is well-suited for jewelry. It withstands everyday wear and retains its finish well when handled with care. Its neutral color makes it timeless and easy to pair with both gold- and silver-toned metals.

As black onyx is a natural material, each stone may vary slightly in shade and texture, contributing to its unique character.

Rose Quartz

Rose quartz is a pink variety of the quartz mineral group and consists primarily of silicon dioxide (SiO₂). On the Mohs scale of mineral hardness, rose quartz has a hardness of approximately 7, making it durable and well-suited for use in jewelry worn daily.

Unlike many other quartz varieties, rose quartz typically occurs in massive form rather than as distinct crystalline points. Its characteristic pink color is caused by trace elements and microscopic structures within the stone.

Historic and cultural significance

Rose quartz has been used in jewelry and decorative objects for thousands of years. In ancient Egypt, the stone was linked to beauty and rejuvenation, and was used in both jewelry and cosmetic rituals. In Greece and Rome, rose quartz was early on associated with love and relationships.

Throughout history, rose quartz has symbolized harmony, emotional balance, and relationships—both romantic and interpersonal.

Symbolism and spiritual significance

In modern crystal traditions, rose quartz is associated with the heart chakra (Anahata). The stone is said to symbolize love, empathy, gentleness, and self-love, and is often used as a reminder of emotional openness and care.

Rose quartz is frequently used as a symbol for:

  • love and relationships
  • emotional balance
  • compassion and tenderness
  • self-love.

Rose quartz in jewelry

Thanks to its hardness and dense structure, rose quartz is well-suited for jewelry. It polishes easily to a smooth finish and retains its color well with normal usage. As a natural material, each stone may vary slightly in shade and transparency, contributing to its unique character.

White Jade

White jade is a light-colored variety of jade, a collective term for the minerals nephrite and jadeite. Jade is known for its toughness rather than extreme hardness, ranking around 6–7 on the Mohs scale. This makes jade highly resistant to cracking and wear.

Historic and cultural significance

Jade has held immense significance, particularly in Chinese culture, where the stone has been viewed as a symbol of purity, wisdom, and moral strength. White jade has traditionally been associated with tranquility and balance and was frequently used in ceremonial objects and jewelry.

Symbolism and spiritual significance

White jade is associated with inner harmony, balance, and tranquility. In crystal traditions, the stone is often linked to the heart chakra (Anahata) and sometimes the crown chakra (Sahasrara), serving as a symbol of stability and emotional equilibrium.

White jade is frequently used as a symbol of:

  • tranquility and balance
  • purity
  • harmony
  • inner stability.

White jade in jewelry

White jade is a durable and tough material well-suited for jewelry. Its milky, slightly translucent appearance gives it a timeless quality and makes it easy to pair with both gold- and silver-toned metals.
